Pop culture ideas about lion social behaviour are actually pretty warped due to projecting human gender roles onto them.
Among African lions, for exampe, the male typically stays home and watches the cubs while the females are out hunting. At the conclusion of a successful hunt, it’s likewise the male who’s responsible for portioning out meat to the cubs (females rarely share their kills with cubs unless the male intervenes). Apart from these situations, males spend most of their time patrolling the borders of the pride’s territory to fend off competing predators, and have little influence in the pride’s day-to-day social organisation.
While in most popular depictions, the male lion “keeps” the pride to serve as his personal harem, it would be more accurate to state that the pride “keeps” the male as a combination bouncer and breeding stud.

Depression does not always mean
Beautiful girls shattering at the wrists
A glorified, heroic battle for your sanity
Or mothers that never got the chance to say good-bye

Sometimes depression means
Not getting out of bed for three days
Because your feet refuse to believe
That they will not shatter upon impact with the floor

Sometimes depression means
That summoning the willpower
To go downstairs and do the laundry
Is the most impressive thing you accomplish that week

Sometimes depression means
Lying on the floor staring at the ceiling for hours
Because you cannot convince your body
That it is capable of movement

Sometimes depression means
Not being able to write for weeks
Because the only words you have to offer the world
Are trapped and drowning and I swear to God I’m trying

Sometimes depression means
That every single bone in your body aches
But you have to keep going through the motions
Because you are not allowed to call in to work depressed

Sometimes depression means
Ignoring every phone call for an entire month
Because yes, they have the right number
But you’re not the person they’re looking for, not anymore

My heart

"

my uncle died of lung cancer this morning
and I wasn’t sure if I should light one up in remembrance
or if this was my sign to quit.
all day I drank coffee and flicked my lighter,
drove past the gas station three times,
came home and slept.

I leave magenta lipstick on my beer bottle.
he says the only way to keep the fire going
is to blow on it as he winks at me.
when he bends down I want to put my knee in his face
but I walk away instead.

the guys at the bar think they are smooth
but I don’t even make eye contact.
it’s the guys who nervously
bite their lip when I look at them
across the coffee shop that steal my attention.
but boys like them only know how to love on paper.

the man I once loved bought me a card
and signed it with just his name.
I wrote about the day we met on pink paper
and nervously handed it to him.
“I don’t understand writers,” he said
as he tossed my paper on his desk.
he kissed my neck
and said I was too pretty to be typing to people on the internet.

It’s easier to love a writer when you are a writer.
It’s easier to understand the quiet moments,
the long nights illuminated by a laptop,
the ink stains on fragile wrists.
It’s easier to love
when you don’t have to explain yourself.

but boys like them only know how to love on paper
and girls like me only know how to cry on tumblr.

"Scott did make a tough call. Remember the whole deal with him using Derek to bite Gerard (I refuse to call it a betrayal, because neither Scott nor Derek had trust in the other).”

Can anybody help me out here?

Because I’m having difficulty in seeing how using Derek to stop Gerard was a “tough call” for Scott.

Scott didn’t bleed for it.

Scott didn’t get hurt while doing it.

The people Scott wanted to protect most (e.g. Allison) got protected.

And going by the snide and sassy "You’re not my Alpha" remark afterwards, Scott didn’t give a fuck about having to override Derek’s bodily autonomy to achieve all that.

There seems to be literally no downside to this for Scott.

Mind, I think it was a clever gambit and it saved everybody in the end…..but a tough call?

Where was the risk for Scott?

Where was the price he paid?

Where was the regret and the guilt for having to hurt somebody else, somebody who begged him not to do it, who was helpless to stop Scott and Gerard from doing it, in order to achieve that goal?

I feel that yes, in this case, the end justified the means, and I think that even lying to Derek about his plans might have been warranted……but really, a “tough call”?

I don’t think so.

The problem I have with this - apart from how the show downplays and kind of violence or abuse toward Derek as if it doesn’t matter - is that we never saw Scott struggling with his decision.

The plot twist came out of nowhere. The show just explained it via flashback, and there was no indication that violating Derek’s bodily autonomy had in fact been a tough call for Scott.

We know he planned in advance for the possibility that Gerard would be bitten. At that point, this plan included Derek, since he was the only alpha  around. Gerard wanted the bite and blackmailed him, and Scott planned ahead for that exact moment.

Scott had the time to switch the pills, which ultimately stopped Gerard. In this scheme, Derek was but a mere tool, he was used exactly in the same way as when Kali and the twins killed Boyd.

The fast-paced story-telling glossed of the reality of what Scott did.

He switched Gerard’s pills.

That act, in itself, is attempted murder. Because even if Gerard had never gotten in a position to receive the bite, Scott stole his cancer medication and replaced it with mountain ash.

And he did that to be prepared for the case that it would come to the point where Gerard would try to get the bite from Derek. Scott accepted that this involved the use of Derek’s body, and decided that there was no need to tell Derek in advance, that Scott didn’t owe it to him to ask.

That was Scott’s decision. And for all we know, he never even considered an alternative.

This is exactly what I’ve been thinking.

That was Scott’s decision. And for all we know, he never even considered an alternative.

Because he had a choice. He had time, he had other options, he simply went with the one plan that was perhaps easiest for him. If he could switch Gerard’s pills with mountain ash without anyone suspecting it, why did he not simply used a pill that would kill Gerard - a mere human dying of cancer no less - all on it’s own. There are, I think, enough fast-working poisons that he could’ve used - I highly doubt Deaton couldn’t get his hands on some or that he didn’t have some druitic poison in one of those jars - that if he’s switch Gerard’s pills with them instead they might never have even come to the point where Gerard was in control of the kanima. He would’ve died much sooner and none of what we saw in the finale would’ve had to happen. I’ve been asking this question for a while and no one seems to have an answer. So why mountain ash? Why the one plan where he knew Derek would be forced to do something against his will, would be used as a weapon and not something else?

As for the reason for not telling him…this whole Derek can’t act deal…I’m sorry but I can’t accept that as a valid reason not to tell someone you’re planning to make him give something he considers a gift to his worst enemy, especially in the manner Scott did. Besides how much acting would it have requared from Derek not to give the plan away? He had no contact with Gerard until the finale. And it’s not like Gerard spent his days carefully observing Derek’s facial expressions to figure out when he was lying or something. Scott didn’t trust Derek, yes, but by that point Scott had seen and knew how much Derek wanted them to be brothers, for Scott to be part of his pack, Scott knew that because he used Derek’s weakness to get close to him, pretending to be part of his pack and on his side only to turn around when he no longer needed Derek and proudly state “You may be an alpha but you’re not mine”. So I find it highly unlikely that Scott would genuenly think that Derek would turn him down if he had gone to him and expalin what was the plan. Whether Scott himself trusted Derek is not really the point because for Scott’s plan to work Derek had to trust Scott and I think that was obvious to everyone including Scott.

So to me all of it boils down to this - Scott does not care for Derek, he never has and I don’t know if he ever will. He does not trust him (at the beginning with good reason but now not so much) and the only times he considers him of any importance is when he needs something from him. So when this shitty little plan popped into his head (or when Deaton suggested it, I wouldn’t put it past him) Scott had no problem with it simply because he does not give a fuck about the guy and what he’d have to do to him.

We didn’t see any struggle or regrett from Scott simply because there was no struggle or regrett to see.

In my head I keep picturing lovely scenarios of friendship and brotherhood between Scott and Derek, and I don’t even know why, because canon often freaks me out with how toxic and unilateral that relationship seems to be. I never got over the S2 finale. Just watching the images above makes me queasy.

It bugs me that Scott’s virtuousness seems to be based on the fact that he won’t kill, because that can be a very arbitrary line, and the show has indeed showed how arbitrary it can be. Scott won’t kill, but he takes away the medication from a cancer patient that probably would die without it. He replaces that medication with a substance that by itself is probably not healthy, and which is meant to cause the sick man much harm when combined with the bite of an alpha werewolf. All this is done with premeditation.

And I’m supposed to think it’s okay because Gerard didn’t die, the whole thing just crippled him a little bit? I’m supposed to think that what Scott did to Derek was okay because, hey, Derek doesn’t seem to hold a grudge, he’s used to that kind of abuse anyway, for him it’s just another Monday?

If Scott’s virtuousness is in his aversion to killing, why didn’t he try to stop Deucalion from killing Jennifer? Oh, well, she’s dead, problem solved, and Scott very conveniently didn’t have to cross that line, thanks, Deuc.

Scott couldn’t swap Gerard’s pills for poison because that would cross the line. He can’t kill directly. But he can stand aside watching while someone else does it, and he can put people’s lives and health in jeopardy, and he can deceive and manipulate (physically and emotionally) others, and all that is totally okay as long as the show can say, “Scott never kills anyone.”

And now Davis keeps saying that this season Derek will finally (?) become a brother to Scott, and he says it like this is a big character evolution for Derek. And I just don’t get it. Because on the show I’ve been watching so far, Derek has been a brother to Scott, sometimes a much more devoted brother than Scott deserves from him. What I’ve been wondering since S1 is when the hell is Scott going to start being a brother (or, hell, even a decent friend, that would be fine too) to Derek? Because that would be a nice character evolution for Scott, I think.

I had hopes for Motel California. At first Scott seemed really devastated about losing Derek. But it wasn’t about that, was it? It was the guilt, the thought of being responsible for Ennis and Derek’s fall, the burden of having crossed the line he wasn’t supposed to cross. But hey, he didn’t! Derek survived, and Ennis did too, only to be killed by somebody else, but that’s okay, it’s okay as long as it wasn’t Scott.

I know some expect to see Scott eventually face his flaws and be held accountable for his screw-ups. I don’t, really. I suspect Davis drank his own True Alpha flavored Kool-Aid, and that’s that. I do think he will get someone killed at some point. But then all his surviving friends will rally around him to show him that it’s okay, because it wasn’t really him that crossed the line, it just happened, okay?
